LINCOLN, CA – Gladys Knight served up some style and great tunes as she and her brother Merald “Bubba” Knight entertained a packed house at Thunder Valley Casino Resort on Friday night.

It was a night for cruising down memory lane as The O’jays and Gladys Knight entertained the masses with hits from the 60’s and 70’s.

In what was an odd decision that had many fans scratching their heads, Gladys Knight elected to perform first followed by The O’jays, even though she had top billing.

As Knight took the stage singing “I Who Have Nothing” followed by “If I Was Your Woman,” the fans started filing in as quickly as possible, realizing the Empress of Soul was already out on stage. By the time she got to her third song, “You are The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” the amphitheater was close to capacity.

Knight looked great and sounded even better as she really got into the music and toyed with the audience in a couple of sing-a-longs.

The 69-year-old diva became popular as Gladys Knight and the Pips. Her brother, who was one of the Pips, joined her onstage and performed a brief medley. Bubba Knight provided the audience with some comic relief as well.

Last year Knight competed on the fourteenth season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, partnering with Tristan MacManus. They were eliminated after losing a “dance duel” to Disney Channel star Roshon Fegan and partner Chelsie Hightower, ironically on the show’s “Motown Week.”

Knight also has a recurring role in the syndicated sitcom The First Family. She portrays the presidents mother, Grandma Carolyn Johnson.

The O’Jays kind of stormed the stage as original members Eddie Levert Sr. and Walter Williams Sr. took the stage along with long time member Eric Nolan Grant.

The 71-year-old Levert looked as if he was struggling to get on stage, but once he joined Williams and Grant he limbered up and started grooving to the tunes as they played hits like “Love Train,” “Lovin’ You,” “I Love Music,” and “Back Stabbers.”

The crew was dressed in bright red outfits and danced in harmony with each other as one would take lead vocals, the other two would remain in lock-step.

They put on a higher energy performance than Knight due to the difference in music styles, but my preference would have been to see Knight close the evening in a style few people can touch.
